I was afraid of frightening and thunder in childhood. But recently, when I was in a dark and quiet indoor space, I began to enjoy listening to those natural sounds during storm. To me, it creates a sense of isolation and safety. My mind becomes free to think and float around.
Therefore, I launched a “Storm House” project via p5.js for everyone to experience the particular environment. The canvas is larger, and audience are able to enable the storm effect by a dark-red button on a dark background. The intro page is still occupied by the flashing words “Welcome to the STORM HOUSE”, like my previous project “press the red button” because I like the striking visual effect it brings. I made the last two characters larger and white to demonstrate the motif of my project.
In the storm page, I embedded the rainstorm sound to a still image that I took in the real storm house in Teshima, Japan. I want to show the contrast between a still image against the noisy music, so I eliminate the raining animation idea. Thus the program becomes simple and minimal, which is always my aesthetic pursue. The music lasts for around three minutes, and when clicking the button again, the canvas will return to the quiet black page.
Some people will stay in the storm page, some will turn it off. They may be anxious, frightened or calming. It is a platform for meditation. Earphones are recommended to participate in the project, it will be helpful for the immersive experience.
